George Washington's Cherry Hand Pies

George Washington may not have actually chopped down a cherry tree, but cherries have become forever associated with America's first president. These delicious hand pies combine sweet cherries with a flaky beef tallow crust for a patriotic dessert perfect for celebrations and holidays.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups cherries, chopped
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • American Tallow pie dough
  • American Tallow for frying
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, combine cherries, sugar, lemon juice, and cornstarch.
  2. Cook until mixture thickens.
  3. Allow filling to cool completely.
  4. Roll dough and cut into circles.
  5. Fill each circle with cherry filling.
  6. Fold and seal edges with a fork.
  7. Heat American Tallow to 350°F.
  8. Fry until golden brown.
  9. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
