Teddy Roosevelt's Tallow-Fried Doughnuts

Theodore Roosevelt was known for living life boldly, and these old-fashioned doughnuts are no exception. Fried in American Tallow, they offer a rich flavor and crispy exterior reminiscent of classic American bakeries.

Ingredients

  • 2½ cups flour
  • 1 packet yeast
  • ¾ cup warm milk
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 2 tbsp butter or American Tallow
  • 1 egg
  • American Tallow for frying

Instructions

  1. Combine warm milk, yeast, and sugar.
  2. Let sit for 5 minutes.
  3. Add egg, flour, and melted tallow.
  4. Knead until smooth.
  5. Allow dough to rise until doubled.
  6. Roll out and cut doughnuts.
  7. Let rise again for 20–30 minutes.
  8. Heat American Tallow to 350°F.
  9. Fry until golden brown.
  10. Dust with sugar or glaze as desired.

Why Use Beef Tallow?

Many traditional bakeries once fried doughnuts in animal fats because they produced superior texture and flavor. Beef tallow helps create a crisp exterior and soft interior.
